Back to Green Cargo Rc.4 part one

Rc 4 1255
Rc 1255 leaving Mora with a long consist of the "Lunch Break Special". In spring of 2004, it is getting pretty common to see GC.s Rc units decked out in the new scheme. Date 30.th April 2004.

Rc 4 1255
During the summer months a combined train with empties are running to Mora where the engines are split and coupled to a pair of waiting consists. Today, the 9th of June is a great day for kids as school's out for the summer. But never minding this extra information, GC business is as usual.

Rc 4 1256
It is cold, it is wet and it is monday, a grey dull monday in light snow fall. The Vasa Ski run week is just a few days away but as allways, on rails it is business as usual so todays edition of Lunch break Special is just about to leave Mora with green Rc4 1256 in charge. Two tracks away, hidden by the just delivered row of freight cars is Rc4 1152 with a timber unit train. That train will have a hour longer wait before run to the paper mills. 21. February 2005.

On the last image the train has left the yard of Mora, crossing a road and dives in to a bridge over Rive Östra Dalälven on its move to Borlänge and south with a timber train. 3th of March 2005.
Rc4 1262
The Ra class was followed by the 6 Rb-class built in three variations used as a testbeds for the new class of standard engines of the Rc-class, which were built in all seven variations from 1967 to the mid eighties, The difference of the Rc classes are mostly internal, due the improvements of technology during the long production time. The Rc 3 and Rc 6 differs from the rest by that they are geared for the maximum speed of 160 km/h, instead for 135 km/h for the Rc classes. Another variation is the Rm engines added with more ballast and geared for 100 km/h for the service for the heavy ore trains. Here we see a modified Rc 4 leaving Mora with a freighttrain in the orginal orange paintscheme, except for the new logo.

GC Rc4 1263
It is more or less the very first day of the Christmas season as the as the Scandinavians celebrate first of Advents which is about the same time as the Thanksgiving. The weekend causes a metaphore in whole communities as all buildings, at least vast majority are decked out for the hliday yet to come. But on rairoad the business is mostly as usual, as the last of this weeks "Lunch Time Special" is getting last attention before leaving Mora. Today, Friday, 26th of November 2004 the consist is lead by green painted but yet weathered Rc4 1263.

GC Rc4 1263
There is a severe snow storm on its way, but it is still a few hours away and there will be more than 25 centimetres of extra snow on the ground. So I guess this timber train with Rc4 1263 will have no trouble at all getting out of its way. Mora 2007-02-14.

GC Rc4 1264
It is February and the month has advanced to its 22th day. It is a bitter cold breeze that reminds you the winter is not quite over yet. During the winter of 2005 Green Gargo has shopped and repainted quite a few Rc units and now they are just becoming as common as the blue bandits. The orange bandits are now very rare species, if not vanished all together from the rails. The unit is asigned to haul todays edition of the now famed? "Lunch Break Special"

GC Rc4 1264
Finally a warm spring day and todaty it was time for the first ice cream of the year. It is saturday and while there is no Lunch break Special, the quest of keeping a pipe line of timber trains continues also in week ends. The main, actually just about all freight that Green Garg o hauls are forestry products, wheter it is raw timber, pulp wood, lumber or wood chips, just about all freights are dominated by them. Thanks to this I guess the line is still pretty active. Mora, 15th of April 2006

GC Rc4 1265
One of the lunch time pleasures is to see the action of adouble headed freight arriving to Mora, where the two engines are split to different train. Here Rc4 1265, is caught during a switching move to the hotter of the two consists. Mora 2006-11-03.

GC Rc4 1265
Rc4 1265 with a sister unit is rolling the final 100 yard before the limits of the container terminal at Årsta with a hot shot container run. Some 20 minutes later the power lash up is rolling over the newer Årsta bridge enroute to the engine terminal and wash up. Årsta, Stockholm 22/12 2006

GC Rc4 1266
Rc4 1268 and equally rebuilt sister Rc4 1272 is waiting for the green signal out of Mora with a "Mega Lunch" It is as common to see green units in 2009, so a lash up of green units are not that unigue as a few years ago. More and more units of GC fleet are modified as road swithcers.
Mora 2009-05-12.

GC Rc4 1267
Winter rail roading puts a lot of extra strain on the equipment, One way to deal with the extra friction during the cold period of times is double heading and spreading out the power to teh end terminals. Most likely this is the case with thes two units coupled to gether at the yard of Mora.

In 2009 it is perhaps more common to see green repaints over the blue bandits and more and more have been modified to remotecontrol road switchers. Mora 2009-02-25 .
GC Rc4 1268
As a part of display of Rc.s in different color, GC Rc 4 1268 was in Gävle in 2002.
GC Rc4 1268
Not longer a display model, but another day at work, GC Rc 1268 is in Mora and the paint has so well faired well, not as far I could notice the colors has not faded off yet. Mora, 21. of Februray 2006.
GC Rc4 1268
Though it is in March it is stilll cold this winter and the winter is not even given a sign to let its grip on the reality. Green Cargo is not taking any chances as the cold eaher adds friction to cars and all freights are now sports two engines, even on the timber runs. Such is the occation I think as I saw this pair of green units. The second unit is Rc4 1301. Mora 2009-03-11.

GC Rc4 1269
Rc 4 1269 is started to roll with an eastbound freight over Falun to Gävle in Borlänge 4th of March 2004. Note that the tank car is unloaded as the rear panto graph is raised. Normally this configuration is the norm, expect for loaded tankcars or anything else that sensitive to the sparks from the catenary and pantograph.

GC Rc4 1269

CG Rc4 1270
At noon, the afternoon freight is about to leave Mora in 26/2 2003. The freight is mostlyconsisted of Hbis cars and kbs loaded with forrest industri products, one easy way to spot this it usually sports a couple empty tank cars from the heating plant just west of Mora.

GC Rc 2 1270
Finally the May is a wonderful tome with a camera and the sight of green grass and fresh green leaves which filters the light is a treat for most of us. It is close for departure for the mid day general freight from Mora. But the train stil needs to be a little patient as the line to Borlänge is not clear yet. There is a Regina train set, the regional passanger train, occupieing the main line on its move to Mora.
Mora 2009-05-06.

CG Rc 4 1272
CG Rc4 1272 is still decked out in the original colors but redecaled for Green Cargo. It is sitting at the large yar of Ånge in the late August 2003.

The repaint to Green Cargo green seems to be slow and the banditation of the orange units does not look as good as on thje blue units. The Rc4.s are used in large numbers on the mainline freights in the northern part of Sweden.

GC Rc4 1272
Rc4 1268 and equally rebuilt sister Rc4 1272 is waiting for the green signal out of Mora with a "Mega Lunch" It is as common to see green units in 2009, so a lash up of green units are not that unigue as a few years ago. More and more units of GC fleet are modified as road swithcers. Finallly this unit is also repainted to green, as one of those units which never wore the SJ.s blue scheme.
Mora 2009-05-12.

GG Rc4 1273
The Green Cargo Rc4 1273 is today the second unit behind a blue bandit sister Rc4 1317, waiting in a hole at Borlänge deparing tracks with a heavy freight. The departure is in a few minutes as on the next track another freight has received the green light.

GG Rc4 1273
The Green Cargo Rc4 1273 is now a leading unit of a combined freight train of mostly empties. Together with equally green sister Rc4 1255 the unit is caught in switching moves before being separated from the sister and coupled to its consist of timber train in 9th of June 2006 in Mora.

GG Rc4 1275
It is 13th of February 2006 in Mora, the winter has a really strong grip on everything and there is a plenty of snow, and much more on its way. The engieneer and the brake an has taken a louch before ty couple up to the Green Gargo Rc4 1275 to its waiting consist.

GG Rc4 1275
Not exactly the nicest weather and it really feels like fall. The hockey season has begun, but unaware of this sensation it is business as usual. Here a green Rc4 1275 with a remote control unit, GC Rc2 1118 is waiting for the high ball with a lengthy set of freight.
2007-09-14 Mora.

GC Rc4 1275
I caught this new move in switching in Mora with the mid day general freight. The two units, lead by Rc4 1275 arrived with a long cut of new two unite articulated timber cars for loading. Then the empties were handed over to the T44 which deliverd the cars to the timber terminal west on town on the unelectrifed streach of the siuthern portion of the Inland Line, then it houled a cut of loaded car and the electrics with the general freight section backed up to the mewly arrived loaded cars.

After the cars are coupled up, the units roll slowly to the eastern throat of the yard, waiting their turn on the main line. Mora 2009-05-05.

GC Rc4 1276
While the Rc 4 1158 was switching of its empty unit log train at western end of the yard, the work day only "Lunch Break Special" is waiting for its turn to get high ball to south, but before that, a Regional south bound X51 which not have arrived to Mora platform tracks will get a head start of 10 minutes. January 26th 2005 in Mora.

12th February in Borlänge the engine is once again handeling a solid train of timber. The timber business is good as the aftermaths of a severe storm in southern parts of Sweden caused a catastrophic havoc and clearing and salvage the timber from the forrests will take months and much of this is hauled on rail to the mills with capacity to handle the timber.

GG Rc4 1276
A lonely unit coasts over the huge older of the two bridges at Årsta as the unit most positivly is to be added as power on a container run.

The bridges are now aday highly accessable thanks to the overpass on the south end and added pedestrian road on the new bridge. The path to the south does offer a better view on the operations on the container terminal unless you are willing to pay 20 cronors for an hour to witness it on the suburban stop at Årstaberg. Årsta 22/12 2007

GC Rc4 1276
Here a follow up photo to athe capture on Rc 1267 seen above. In 2009 GC finally started to reebuild the aging fleet of RC units to modern class of engines, called Rd and purchase a number of new power named Re. But still the unrebuilt units are repainted and remodelled to road switching configuration. Mora 2009-02-25 .

GG Rc4 1276
It is close to departure for the GC timber train with GC Rc4 1276 in charge. Compared to earlier photos, the later repainted units now seem to have lost the circular white grafics at he B-cab. But Rc4 1276 still carry them.

Green Gargo on the march
In last rays of light in 12. February in Bollnäs Rc 4 1278 is in charge with a TOFC/COFC (Trailer and Container On Flat Car) hot shot. In winter 2005/2006 Green Gargo seem to have overhauled its big fleet of Rc.s used on road power.

Now when all units except one hiistoric orange repaint, are exhausted, the number of the rather handsome Blue Bandits are getting less dominant compared a year or two ago.
CG Rc 4 1279
The other unit I found in orange CG scheme was this RC 4 1279.

GC Rc4 1279
It is Mega Lunch time, I had a sallad today, a ham and chese one, but nevermind... Rc2 1115 is leading a consist of general mixed freight out of MOra, but not quite yeat as the crew was not around. My bet is that they were on lunch too... Anyway the train is yet to get their cut of loaded timber cars which is a duty of the yards diesel switcher, a T44-class unit.

There seems to be a policy to keep the freights in halt, untill the passanger trains finish loading and unloading. After the X50 shuttle left, The freight waited for a Stockholm bound IC to finish its unloading before heading for the east coast by Falun.

SJ Rc4 1285
In the end of the ninetines the freights to Mora were still heavy enough to be doubleheaded.

GC Rc4 1285
Things has changed with Rc4 1285 since the picture above, it is now repainted in Green Gargo green and is no longer in SJ roster, at least officially. Green Cargo has become a major transport operator as it is a major owner of Norwegian GargoNet. Still it is seen on Mora line and this time it is double heade with blue Rc4 1185 and will return as solo power for the south bound timber train. Mora 25th February 2005. More images of this unit on this train click here.

In 13.th of April the green unit is back with a tow of set of loaded pulpwood train set as seen in the two lower images.
CG Rc4 1286
It is not often to see freights during the weekends in Mora but during this Saturday, the 24th october 2003, a light running Rc 4 1286, is to pick up a cut of timber loads southbound.

CG Rc4 1290

CG Rc4 1290

I guess the idea came from the rail fans, as there was all in the sudden just onesole unit in the whole Rc-family decked out in original colors. As the last orange revenue pulling electric was due the shops, Green Gargo noticed the requests, and painted the unit in slightly modified version of the original colors. Only variation is the lettering, NAturally there was no Green Gargo when this unit rolled out and the fonts on lettering on the data complies with the recent repainted units in green color.

Rc4 1295 in orange still in 2004!

A little study on still in original orange paint, we see GC Rc 4 1295 leaving Mora with an extra timber loaded unit train for the paper mills in south. In this date, 19th of August 2004, there are vanishing few units still painted as they left the ASA plant in Västerås. During the spring of 2004 GC started a program of repaint the last remaining orange units in to the new corporite green.

The forrestry products are the vast majority goods hauled on rail in Dalecarlia. Anything from raw timber to building materials like boards sheets, and wood chips are much hauled on rail.

GC Rc4 1295
Few years back this would be an everyday routine, a Rc4 in its original scheme. But in 2004 this is actually a small sensation, as many of the engines were repainted in blues new scheme of SJ before they were transered in to GC ownership and lately the repainting activities in to new green scheme has made orange units very rare. Here Rc4 1295 is leaving with a unit timber train Mora in 18.th of April 2004
GC Rc4 1295

CG Rc 4 1296
GC Rc4 1296 is leaving with a pulpwood unit train from Mora in late August 2003.

As a personal reflection I think I see a pattern in SJ and CG repaintings. The earlier Rc.s are are repainted as soon as possible to blue after the passanger units of Rc3 and Rc6 where repainted, while the Rc 4.s, which are assigned to northern parts of the country the pace of repaintings been a bit slow. This engines will never seen the ex SJ blue, but will sport CG green scheme.

These images has its story, abpout an hour earlier there was a much larger consist with a green painteed GC Rc on the lead. The consist was pretty intetesting as it featured a cut of for the region unusual Habis large capacity all door cars. I had a camery but no battery.... Obviously, that train had allready left before I got a battery, The unusual long freight could not handle, or the switching was delayed the two empty tank cars and these were coupled to the pulpwood unit train. Th4e pulpwood train left Mora much earlier than usual, about four five hours earlier...

14. January 2004 was not a day, that was exellent for taking pictures.

But the operation runs despite the wet rainy day. Todays power was Rc 4 1301, which is pictured here finishing the run around move the waiting freight. The length of the consist does vary, today it was just a handful freight cars, consisting of the pair of empty tankcars, and four all door cars of forest industry products. GC Rc4 1305.
A pair of Rc.s of different vintage is waititng for the green signal to the south form the yard of busy Mora. The consist is heavy as it is the combined general freight, which I earlier called "Lunch Break Special" with a trainset of two unit articulated timber cars all heavily loaded with raw timber to the sawmills or to the every hungry, paper mill at Kvarnsveden, just North of Borlänge. Both units are wearing the now usual green paint with diagonal stripe for the remote control units, though none of the engines has been rebuilt to road switchers.

There are a number of RC units which will be further rebuilt with modern components and these are reclassified as Rd-class. Green Cargo has also ordered its first neew engines of Germans design, which will be named as Re-class. But for many years to come these veterans will dominate the freight train servies in Sweden. One more example of the fact that the blue bandits are become more scarse, here Rc4 1307 with Rc2 1149 is waiting patiently for its engineer to finish his break and to get the train back rolling with its heavy train of steal slaps. One new addition to the freight trains are the bullet proof windows, introduced with first Rc5 1323, now Rc6 1323 rolled out from the plant. All of the Rc5/6 were equpped with these and the 160 km/h fast Rc3.s were also so eguipped. More modenations are new antenna and one single strut pantograph. The engine was caught in Bollnäs 12. february 2006.

This image is a typical, and perhaps a bit romantic for rail fans, a Postal Christmas Special. That is about 15 R.P.O.s filled with Christmass packages, Cristmass cards for delivery, hopefully before the holiday. The train is heavy enough, or it as a precaution for the on coming snowstorm, that a second Rc is required to keep the train on time. 22th December 2004 at Stockholm Central station.

The green painted GC Rc4 Rc1315 is enjoying the late summer day at the lead tracks to the engine terminal which now is the operation hub for the private Hector Rail. The unit stayed parked even at the following evening as most of the customers were still shut down as it was the last weeke of the annual summervacation.

GC Rc 4 1317
The CG Rc4 1317 is this time at the terminal in Borlänge as the business is not that busy during the weekends in 12th February 2005, which seem to at this date host quite of few of later models of freight Rc.s, normally reserved for the lines in northern part of the country.

GC Rc 4 1317
It is soon time for departure in Borlänge and the engineer is chatting with someone of the switching grew to kill the remaining few minutes. In Borlänge Green Cargo diplays an impressivies show as the busy hauler dominates the yard. Though the city sees a hourly InterCity trains and some regional runs the GC is just as busy with its freights.
GC Rc4 1318
One of the last Rc4.s served as a second unit on a freight. Only couple of years before these shots were taken the freights on the mainline Mora -Borlänge were hauled like this. Double headed Da.s on timbertrains, other freghts by a single SJ Ma. Today, this picture is actually a piece of history, the engine is part of Green Cargo and the train is handeled by a single unit.
GC Rc4 1318
It is the mid summer eve a natioanl holliday in Sweden, but the freight with a few loads is ready to departure from Mora with GC Rc4 1318 as power.

The CG Rc4 1319 is ready to roll with another daily "lunch break special" from Mora in April 2004.

CG Rc4 1319
The winter is late in November 2011 but the frost is there, created by misty morning and zero degress C during the day which adds a little exta white to the landsacpe. Todays poer for a rather short combined train of timber and forrest products is about to leav Mora close to the noon. Todays power is Rc4 1319 and Rc4 1286, which still wears the early version of Green Cargo paint scheme with white dot graphics.

CG Rc4 1322
The very last Rc4 ever built, caught up in Mora 10. December 2003. The mixed freight has grown in to a rather respectable size, perhaps the operation has been affected by the ongoing Christmas rush.
