Green Cargo Rc.1

(freight units)

GC Rc1 1007
The 1967 built veteran doing its daily duty, humpservice and transferruns. Here the 1007 is puushing cars over the crest in Borlänge 4. March 2004.

GC Rc1 1007
The first Rc ever built was Rc1 1007, caught here in Borlänge in March 2003. In its appearence many things has changed and even its main asignment. No longer it is a part of mainline fleet, instead it is mainly used as a heavy switcher in Borlänge. In the yard 1007 and its sisters are commonly used on humpservice.

GC Rc1 1007
If few more shots at the 35 year old veteran working the hump. The Rc.s are pretty quiet but the Rc1,s are not. Sounding like the worlds largest vacum cleaner it has worked up its consist over the crest and now giving the cut of cars over to the bowl tracks. At Borlänge there are three Rc1.s asigned to work the hump, two are active and the third is a reserve unit.

GC Rc1 1007
The first Rc ever constructed is still earning its keeping in 2005. Soon 40 year old has seen a lot of changes, Now and its nineteen sisters are heavy switchers and in Borlänge four of them work the yard, heavy industrial switching and some road duty on mostly timber unit trains. Here on 22th of August 2005 the venerable unit is working hard with a long cut of yard over the hump in Borlänge. Still smooth running but sounding like the worlds largest vacum cleaner the unit handeled the cut like it was nothing.

But in 20th June 2005, the unit was having a day off as seen on the top image.

GC Rc1 1007
The Rc1 1007 is though being now pretty old still a hard working unit on the switching and heavy insdustrial transfer runs. Borlänge 23. March 2006.

Then again May 13th same year the unit is once again caught on the crest and in 20.May resting at the terminal.

GC Rc1 1007
Still after 40 years after it was delivered to SJ this engine still earns revenue to its owner- Though the basic carbody is the same, it has been modified and transfered to heavy yard duty and to new ownership. Conviniently the engine ran to this spot by its one man switching crew on remote controll as he jumped of the small switching steps on the corner of the engine and heading for the beans. An hour later the engine still sat on that very same spot as seen on the second shot.

GC Rc1 1007
In 2012 the time is to start to run out on the older electrics as the Ma-class is to fade away to scrap yards and the Rc1.s will most likely not be around many more years. None so far are reapinted and few have have been stored. Still the first of them all seems to be in a good shape as it rests on the crest of the hump at Borlänge.
Borlänge 2012-04-05.

GC Rc1 1014
The Rc1 1014 is asigned in Ånge and used for the heavy switching at one of the major terminals along the northern mainline. The town is very much influenced by the railroad and still today BV uses the site as a major MoW hub. The yard itself is very easy to take photos from.
GC Rc1 1015
Weekend lull means that many units are parked outside the engine terminal of Borlänge. All the Rc1.s such as this bandit Rc1 1015 and several road units of Rc2 and Rc4.s has received a additional diagonal stripe to indicate that the units are remote controllable.

Note that engine is now in Green Cargo roster and received new decals.

Rc1 1015
The Rc1.s at Borlänge sees busy duties on the humps and the swithcing and transfer runs from the heavy industries. Rc1 1015 is about to finish its luchbreak and leave to the large steel plant for another cut of cars.

Rc1 1015
The Swedish National railway (SJ), has been a strong believer on standard designs ever since the mainlines were electrified. The first of the standard designs were the various D-class 2-6-2. from the thirties. The design was considered so succesful that SJ oredered a modifed class, Da during the fifties. But during the sixties the D-class needed to be replaced, and the new standard design was the RC. The first batch were constructed during the late sixties and within time modified to improve performance and working conditions. During the nineties, the engines were considered as surplus and sat idle, cannibalized for parts to keep their younger sisters of classes Rc2-Rc6 running. By, the mid nineties it was desided to convert a number of these engines to yard service. Switching platforms and various other details were added. Here we see the 1015 sitting idle during a afternoon break from the hump duty in Borlänge during the summer of 2001.

GC Rc1 1015
Rc1 1015 is having a day off or lunch hour while she sits in the north end of the Borlänge yard in 22th of August 2005

GC Rc1 1015
It is 23. March 2006 and The Rc1 1015 is returning with a cut of pressurized tank cars to the yard of Borlänge. Borlänge is a fairly new city, dominated by large industry as a large steel mill and a as large paper mill the latter located just north of the city in Kvarnsveden.

GC Rc1 1015
It is around four o'clock in the morning and there still some time of lull before Rc1 1015 will get the call of duty. Borlänge 2007-05-18

GC Rc1 1015
The first class of Rc units do get to road duties even they are considered as heavy duty switchers. But it is rare to see them on road asignments as far as Mora. Here Rc1 1015 with a green painted younger sister is patiently waiting their turn to get access to the mainline to Borlänge. Mora 2010-03-11.

GC Rc1 1016
One of the most interesting power assignments are the unit pulpwood runs from Mora. The power of these appearently low priority freight run uses what ever available GC Rc power including this Rc1 1016 that is normally used as a heavy switcher or in hump service Photo Mora 10.th of April 2004.

GC Rc1 1016
Rc1.s are usually kept as workhorses for the ramps still in use and for heavy transfer services. But as allways weekends is not busy and Rc1 1016 is back at the Terminal in Borlänge. Borlänage 13th of February 2005.

GC Rc1 1016
To see a Rc1 on lead of an hot shot freight in 21th century is rather rare. Rc1 1016 filled in with a hot shot in Mora in 18.th of May 2005.

GC Rc1 1017
Rc1 1017 proves that though it is considered as a switcher it still sees road service. 8.th February 2004, it was used to haul a timber unit train from Mora. I had a bit of a luck as. the engine started to move when I got there.

My guess is that the engine was pressed into road service due lack of available road GC units, which does happend during the winter, specially when heavy snow fall combined of low temperature.

GC Rc1 1017
Though considered as pretty stationary since considered as switchers. they do get around as GC RC1 1017, now located in Äng yard. Ånge is a busy place for meets and crew changes for the freights on the busy trunk line between north and south. Date 13. May 2004.

GC Rc1 1017
The switchers stay true to their home turf but occationally some do get to travel, like the Rc1 1017 which was found in Borlänge 22th of August 2005.

GC Rc1 1017
This is a rare occation to see a Rc1 as thhe power for a hot freight in Mora I guess it is a first time I have seen these units as power for "Lunch Break Special". Mora 20/12 2007.

GC Rc1 1018
Rc1 1018 is standing by to be used for the next set of freight cars to being humped. Note that Rc1.s and some of the road units carries an extra red diagonalstripe, to indicate that the engine can be controlled by a remote control.

The unit doing just the same job as previously in March 2004.

Still in hump duty at Borlänge, date this time 20.th May 2004.

GC Rc1 1018
Today 20th june 2005 Rc1 1018 has reached the hump an will roll to the yard to fetch another cut of cars over the hump. Hump Switching is a interesting railroading to watch, animated by squiling wheels against the retarders.

GC Rc1 1018
The winter of 2006 was long and severe but in April at least you could sence the warm rays of the sub. Today Rc1 1018 is working the hump.

On the third image, from 20th may 2006 Rc1 1018 is having a day off at the terminal of the huge yard of Borlänge. It seems to stay near work as the hunp is seen in the background.
Rc in Garsås in the early 1990.s.
During the early 1990-es the IC consist between Stockholm and Mora was still decked out with cars designed in the 1960.es. But gradually this was replaced by newer cars dating from 1980.s.
Rc1 1018
The sister unit Rc1018 dragging another cut of cars to be humped over the hump. The diagonal stripe on the side on some units indicates that the unit is also able to run on remote control. Beside switching duties, the engines see occationally service as a second unit in a heavy freights.

GC Rc1 1018
The Rc1 1018 on the crest of hump in 7.th of August 2003. At Borlänge 4 Rc1. are used to handle the hump, local swithcing, transfer runs and occational road service.

GC Rc1 1018
It is 23. March 2006 and The Rc1 1018 is today working the hump yard with Rc1 1007. The yard is vast and there is not that much of natural photo spots. This pair are taken from the parking lot of the engine terminal.

GC Rc1 1019
In Ånge there are two Rc1.s used for the heavy switching, the units are Rc1 1014 and 1019 pictured here. Photo August the 9.th 2003.

GG Rc1 1022
Green Gargos Rc1 1022 in Ånge August 2003. Änge is a very accessable yard to visit. With a parade of heavy freights but a rather limited SJ passenger trafic, but also it is a terminal for Tågab mittlinje, with their bright red equipment really stands out from the every day blue.

GG Rc1 1022
Another ex Ånge based Rc1 now calling Borlänge as a home is Rc1 1022, which is seen at the northern end of huge yard of Borlänge in 22. of August 2005. Here we see pretty clear the diagonal extra red stripe which means that this engine is also equipped with remote control.

All Rc1.s and a number of Rc2 road units are equipped with remote controls an sports also this extrea stripe.

GG Rc1 1022
The winter of 2005-2006 is pretty much severe and thcold weather and the unusually for later years plentyful snow. caused extra strain in the shops. Here one of the hump engines has parked next to the shop tracks to get its share of attention. Borlänge 2006-03-11.

GG Rc1 1022
GC Rc1 veteran is parked by the yard office at the large freight yard of Borlänge. It makes you wonder how many kilometers this 1968 built electric has run. Still its muscles are needed for the hump service at the yard, and on occationla transfer or secondery road service. Yet none of the first series RC-units are been repainter or reserved in to RD-modernation program, so I guess this will be the final looks on the units before their final retirement someday.
Borlänge 2011-12-03.

GC Rc1 1022
It is close to Easter and things has slowed down before the hollidays. I guess after the lunch break the crew will have a pretty slow as many of the customers shut down during the Easter hollidays..
Borlänge 2012-04-05.

GC Rc1 1024
While its sisters are kept busy at the hump in Borlänge, Rc1 1024 is having a rest at the engine terminal.

GC Rc1 1024
So far, I haven't been able to shoot RC1 1024 at work as once again sits in terminal area in Borlänge in 13th of February 2004.

GG Rc1 1026
Green Gargos Rc1 1026 hauling a unit pulpwood run from Mora in March 2004. See more details on this engine at the features.

The same unit at same train service but this time it is 21.May and location is just south of the Borlänge yard limits.

GG Rc1 1026 & Rc2 1131
Green Gargos Rc1 1026 and her younger sister is underway after a short stop near the platform tracks at Borlänge in 13th february 2005, with a heavy unit train of raw timber for the large paper mills or for the ports on the east coast.
Though considered as switchers mainly the close to 40 years old units get a chanche to grind some mainline rails.

GC Rc1 1026
Rc1 1026 is seen here doing what she actually is asigned to do, switching heavy cuts in the yards and delivering heavy cuts of transfer to the city of Borlänges heavy industry as the large steel work and the huge paper mill just outside of the city. Date 22th of August 2005.

GG Rc1 1026
The very last Rc1 unit ever buyilt sees a little more road service than usual in fall of 2011. By this time the Rc-units are very grimy and as far I have seen, none has bee repainted in to the newer Green Cargo green. So I guess they will not see any duties within a few years. Still here the unit sitsin yard of Mora having a day off as i guess it will be hauling the first freight to the south, consisting of a unit train of wood chips.
