MaK.s sweet revenge?
It is close to mid night at the brightest time of the year and Another interesting train of containers and cars pulls up from Drammen to Dombås. Here the combined train is split up and one section with the black SJ Rc is heading over the mountains to Trondheim while the last five articulated cars of containers and automobiles are heading with this ex NSB Di 6 to Åndalsnes. I manage to shoot a 7 minute long footage on my cell phone as the diesel after waitong a pair of CargoNets Di8.s with their consist came to the yard. 2009-06-16 Dombås

Ex NSB Di6.
MaK.s sweet revenge part II?
This was a suprice, a ex NSB.s illfated Di6 back in service on freights in Norway. Now owned by MaK.s leasing fleet this huge six axled 3800 hp strong behemont in idle was enough to keep the earht shaking. A private operator uses these engines, now 3 of them, numbers MaK DE2700-04, MaK DE2700-05 and MaK DE2700-09 on this service and more of them were coming. But the load of one articulated container car and three articulated auto racks are not a match for these units. The crew mentioned that MaK has fixed the bugs they had as they were delivered and if NSB should have had a little more patient, they would have had an impressive engines. And they should looked great in NSB red whith yellow trim and pilots some ten years later. 2009-06-15 Dombås

GargoNet Di8.701
With a new camera I am able to try on night shots! In the middle of the night the quiet yard of Dombås suddently comes alive. In the background the pair of units that handles the freight trains on the Raumaline are waiting for a meet of a pair of freights with El14.s on power. After setting the cars and picking up cars the both freights leave and the diesels couple up and get ready for a run to the port town. Date 7th of June 2005 in Dombås.

GargoNet Di8.701
There is a meet with a delayed southbound Bm92.01 for Hamar at Elverum asnd the station operator has flagged the freight to halt while the passanger train is loading on and off its passangers. After the yard tracks are clear, the unit will perform some switching, See more on features or click here.

Unlike some of its sisters at the dead track not far away, the Di8.702 is still earning revenue for GargoNet. Photo at Marieborg in Trondheim 1.st of September 2004.
NSB Di8 in Dombås
NSB Di8 at the Marieborg shops. 2003
New Di8 has just replaced the venerable Di3.s on frightruns on Raumaline and takes an afternoon break in Dombås. During this date the Nohabs still hauled the passengerruns which was down to only 3 cars a train, and the night train was discontinued.

GargoNet Di8.704
The business seems to have picked up on Rauma line as the two Di8.s used on the line sees a hard work. But now the work is over for a few hours and the consist has gotten it self a new power in form of El16.2211 before it is allowed to run south. The engines are rotared from Marieborg (Trondheim) in weekly bases.

GargoNet Di8.705
The business is low on the one of the longest unelecrified line in Norway, the Röros line, but in Elverum 31.st of August 2004 The Di8.705 is switching its mix of timber- and woodchip container cars for a southbound run. These trains are a bit of oddity on GargoNet operations as everything else on the mainlines are all on containers on flat cars these days.

NSB Di8.706 at Marieborg 2003
The Di8.706 seemed to been in an accident, and may no more run under the services of Gargonet or NSB. NSB/Gargonet is trying to sell the entire fleet of Di8.s only after a few years of services.

GargoNet Di8.709
The crew of the Di8.709 is apperently having lunch break as the unit is swithching the large saw mill in Otta. The east section of the yard is domineted by the stacks of sawed timber and the sent of sawed timber fills the air around the station area. 31/5 2006 in Otta.

CargoNet Di8.711.
Hot rod version of a locomotive? Well, it seems that CargoNet needs the services of Di8.711 a bit more and seem to have overhauled the engine which is painted in snappy red. The umit was pulled for a spin by the shop goat, but the unit have so far not planned to a repaint into gray and black.

NSB Di8.712
The latest unit on death row at Marieborg is this di8.712.

NSB Di8.713 and El16.2214

NSB Di8.713
A pair of different classes of engines at the twighlight of service years caught in Dombås last days of August 2003? The Di8.s are for sell and some units of the earlier batch of El.16.s has been sold of to Sweden to Tågkompaniet and TGOJ. Still to this date the El16 2214 retains its red and blackscheme as many of the remaning sisters are decked out in Cargonets grey and black.

At the first day of June 2004, the unit is at the terminal of Marieborg.

GargoNet Di8.713 & Di8.717
The Di8.s soldiers on on freight service on the unelectrifed lines in Norway. They are also used as heavy switchers and though they are relatively new units they are showing years of hard work. I guess they will not be breaking the record of Di3.s of many which were in service over 40 years. But on the Rauma line from the coastal town of Åndalsnes to the junction to the main line in Dombås they do put an impressive show as they leave a smoke behind them allmost like a steam engine.

NSB Di8.714
It looks like a serious waste of money, or shortsided investment plans to see an allmost new engine cannibalized for parts to keep its sisters running. The Di8.714 seen here at the shops of Marieborg in Trondheim has not only lost its primemovers and hoods but also its trucks. A years later the unit is till at the same spot. Can you check how many parts has been lost during this year?

NSB Di8.715 in Dombås in May 2003
The Di 8.s in what I saw in 2003, are starting show off wear and tear, no longer as quiet or fresh in paint they still are the backbone of NSB diesel operations. NSB unlike their first report are not happy of these units and Gargonet, the name of the freight divison in Norway, are palnning to replace them only a few years. Rather suprizing, as the memories of the illfated Di6.s has not faded away. In general the operations seem to declined quite a lot since the 1990.s The Freight on Raumaline used to need a pair of Di3.s or later Di8.s to handle a 16-20 car freights on the steep and twisting route. IN May 2003, a single had no trouple to handle the five cars of freight. The consist however was apair of Green Gargo all door 2 axle car, a VTG tankcar and a pair of green two unit automobile cars, of which one of them was ex Swedish car. This while at the larger yards Gargonet/NSB freight cars was sitting idle in large numbers, even modern cars!. A merger on the horizon?

Di8.715 and Di8.704 are assigned to the train service on Raumaline and arrives with a wealthy consist of containers. trailers and car carries to Dombås in 1/6 2006.

Di8.718 parked at the shops of Marieborg, at least it looks to be a bit better of than few of its sisters.

CargoNet Di8.717
It is actually mid night in Dombås and we see the todays power for the freights on Rauma line. On the way to Dombås, Di8.717 leads while on the route to Åndalsnes the sister Di8.720 is doing the honors.

GargoNet Di8.718
The D8.718 is still feeling a lot better than some of its sisters, still active it is to night a part of two unit lash up for the now increasing sized freight on the Raumaline. This shot was taken in the middle of the night in 7th of June 2005 in Dombås.

GargoNet Di8.718
The night from mid night to 90 minutes later is a time when the sleepy line all in sudden burst in to live. One of the interesting feature is the freights from diesel only Raumaline. Since the Di3.s were taken out of duty, this has been hunting grounds for the center cabbed Di8.s like Di8.718 with a friend on shots taken between 29th and 31st August 2006 in Dombås.

CargoNet Di8.719.
Freight on Raumaline with Di8.

During my visit in june 2004, the traffic has picked up a bit since 2003. By then a single unit, was more than enough to haul a handful of containers and other freight cars over the line. In 2004, the number of freight cars in the yards of Åndalsnes and Öran freight yard has increased again though not in to the numbers that was still in the late 1990.s. The line used two units MU.ed together, the lash up, handeled the road service and did some heavy swithching with tank cars and containers.

CargoNet Di8.720
The main change in 2004 compared to year earlier is that the Di8.s are now missing NSB logos on the sides of the cabs. The news are that the CargoNet, wants to get rid of these units and in May 2004 there were three units on the death row, of one 8.714 has lost more parts then still owns. A really sad sight as the units are new high tech locomotives. But 8.711 seen here is one of the active ones though here located not far from the scrap track.

CargoNet Di8.720
Still after some 4 years on being on sales list GargoNet still needs the Di8.s which sees heavy hauling on the diesel lines. Atleast on Rauma-line the tonnage has increased and the line uses DI8.s in tandem to keep up. Here Di8.720 gets a bit of rest after hard work in Dombås.

NSB Di8 in Trondheim
NSB Di8.720 in Hönefoss.
NSB started with new dieselprogram of two new classes to replace Di3.s and the second hand DB V60.s class Di5, a doublecabbed Di6 for the heavy mainline duties and Di8.s for heavy switching and mainline duties. The Di6.s proved to be lemons, and after legal battles the NSB had enough with the various short comings in all engines, and they where sent back to the manufactor.

But the Di8.s proved to be a success at least comapared to Di6.s, and they are seen everywhere. Di8.s haul freight on diesel lines, does online switching on locals on electrified mainlines and are used as switchers on the major terminals. As this Di8 in Trondheim in 2000 and in Hönefors same year.

NSB Di8s in Raumaline at Bjorli
A pair of Di8.s on evening freight from Åndalsnes to Dombås in late july of 2000. The Di8. was to replace Di2 and Di 5 classes as switchers, but as the Di6.s proved to not be what NSB wanted so the engines replaced Di3.s on freighttrains on Rauma- and Röros-lines. All the hoodunits of NSB are painted or repainted to this colorful red-yellow scheme.

I chanched this train from Verma loops to Bjorli. The Photoconditions was to poor in Verma area as it was rather late in the summer evening. But in Bjorli it was enough light to get this image. The engines are normaly very quiet but in Bjorli I could hear the engines growling sound echoing to the mountainwalls minutes the train could slowdown enough to let a crew member board of the engine and walk to realign the switch. Di3.s were not exactly quiet, and it would been nice to witness as they battled through the grade with a freight....

GargoNet 66402
The new EMD units of 66 class are kept busy hauling freight on the Nordland line between Trondheim to Bodö. But they need a bit of attention too, So the engines are maintained at Marieborg in south Trondeheim. So far being a bit camera shy, they once awhile are accessable for shooting. Here 66.402 is rolling slowly to the shop area 6th of July 2005.

GargoNet GM66402
The don't score high points in looks but does that in performance, at least considering the failure of Di6-class they replaced. Looking a lot like subway car bodies in heavy trucks or a basset hounds, but don't get fooled by the low and narrow profile as they are the most powerful of all mainline diesels in Norway.
2007-06-19 Trondheim.

GargoNet GM66405
The freight trains are ahndled by the Class 66 engines. These poweful engines were what the NSb Gods/GargoNet needed to replace the illfated Di.6 class engines in a short order. A pair of these are to leave the busy yard of Trondheim with a north bound freight to Bodö.

GargoNet GM66406
The final? replacement for Di3.s in freight service since the illfated 12 Di.6s are the six Canadian built EMD.s originated from the Yeoman class engines built for Brittish Rails in the 1990s. Slowly the class 66 has been developed from this engine and had inheritade the smaller english profike. They are looking a lot like a strange kitbash of a husky chassies and trucks from a US engine combined with a rail car or even a subway sized body. Theyt are used by private operators in Germany and TGOJ in Sweden where they are classified as T66.s, Here we see a CargoNet 66.406 has just deliverd a cut of empty log cars to the main yard of Trondheim, the cars are overtaken for switching by much punier Skl 226 class switchers and leisurely rolls to Marieborg in 1. September 2004.

Jernbaneverket Mz 1415
The final of the series of Nohabs were the MZ-class built in early 1970.s and forward and there were four subclasses built for DSB. This unit wandered off to north and now is hauling heavy ballast trains for the MoW organistaion of Jernbaneverket. The unit unlike the bulldog nose engines, like the DSB My or Mx or NSB.s own Di3/3a.s uses more powerful engine in form of a 16 cylinder 645 engine which is turbo charged to give 3 300 horsepower.
