Swedish Narrow gauge diesels
SRJ 55 |
Narrow gauge main line dieselsHere is an one of the kind engine with a rather interesting story. It was built as combines diesel and electric unt for the rather large net work od Stockholm Roslagen Railway in 1946 along its now scrapped sister #54. The unit was called as "Pig" because its engines sound and kept this nickname after it had its diesel engine removed and was used on suburban trains un tillthe line was reequipped withs its current set of EMU.s. Now it is reconstructed once again in to a straight dieselelectric unit by the preserved railroad, ULJ. The conversation has taken a few years now and preceding slowly.Faringe 2010-07-22
SJ Tp 3515 |
At the very end of the modernization of the 3 foot network in Sweden SJ ordered a number of 25 of these sizeable diesels to replace the steam engines. But soon after their delivery many of the lines where shut down and rather than scrapping or selling these rather new engines, many where rebuilt to 0-8-0 siderod normal gauge diesels with modified bodies. Few however remained as 2-6-2 narrow gauge diesels in to the 1980.s when the SJ either sold off or shut down is remaing lines. The remaining units where transfered to preserved lines. Here Tp 3515 is waiting for its call to duty on preserved line between Upsala and Faringe, the line is the longest preserved line in Sweden.

Narrow gauge crittersIt is rather unbelieveable that this "cute" little thing was the doom of the small tank engines as it rolled out as the very first of the standard light duty diesel for the narrow gauge lines. It was the prototype for a number of Z4p and Z4t class diesels delivered to SJ. The SJ version differs from the this first production unit but the oulines are the same. Today this little unit was found working hard with pushing a trainset after todays work on the Preserved line between Uppsala and Faringe in to the car sheds.Faringe 2010-07-22
DONJ 5 |
The narrow gauge net after the nationalization was rich on steam engines of various types and standards. This meant that the outdated and outworn equipment needed a replacement. After a series of Gp/Gt 2-8-0.s and the dieselrailcars of Yp/t types SJ dveloped light diesels to replace the steam engines on lighter runs, the heavier were hauled by remaining steam or by then new diesels of Tp-class. DONJ dieselized some of their operation and purchased this critter of SJ Z4p designed engine to its roster. Today it is part of JTJ roster and share yard and even passenger duties with its ex. SJ nad ex. NklJ sisters. The sceme is the orginal for DONJ diesels, SJ.s were redbrown.

I caught this little trim little unit side by side with a younger sister at Jadraas in a Saturday afternnon in mid July. It is intersting to see the differneces between the boxier earlier production unit with its a bit rounder later production unit. Jädraås 2010-07-10
NKlJ z4 2 |
A study of the two common phases of Z4p classes. The Z4p was designed fort the 891 mm (Swedish 3 ft gauge), while the sisters of Z4t was designed for the 1067 mm gauge. None of the Z4t, has been preserved but a number of z4p.s. They find themselves useful on mainly Mow duties on preseved lines and at times of dry seasons as power on histrical trains to prevent fires. All the Z4.s as their standard gauge sisters z43-class are chain driven. Jädraås 2010-07-10

ULJ has also along the very first z4p, SRJ Z4 1, a member of the last production group in its roster. Though a few of these units were deliverd to private owners the vast majority was deliverd to SJ. In its SJ scheme the former SJ Z4p 406 waiting its call to MoW service by the roundhouse. Faringe 2010-07-22
