)(HECTORRAIL

HectorRail
141 003-4
One of the most exotic engines in service in Sweden are the ex Austrian Railroads prototype engines of former 1012-class. These engines were ment to be the prototypes for the new standard engines for both expree and Intercity service, but proved to be expensive to build and ÖBB opted for Taurus engines instead. HectorRail while purchasing their fleet of secondhand engines of ÖBB 1042/1142 was offered to buy the three protoypes which has become orphans in ÖBB fleet. The engines were rebuilt with some degree to become more dependable and to cope with the Swedish weather. They also got ATC installed and usually pulling Veolias passenger trains between Malmö and Stockholm but also found to haul freight. They are at 230 km/h the fastest engines in Sweden in theory but restricted to 160 km/h
The engine numbers and name:
  • 141 001-6 Ripley
  • 141 002-6 Kiddo
  • 141 003-4 Starling
Here the very handsome looking 141 003-4, "Starling" was found at the vast yard of Ånge.

ÖBB started to get deliveries of their new electrics of Br 1042-class in1960.s and the deliveries where carried out to the 1970.s. The engines were used in all kinds of services on all mainlines except on the famed Arlberg line, which was the mainstay of 1020, 1010/1110 and the newer 1044/1144-classes. In the mid nineties these 20 or more okld engines was given a upgrade and reclassified as Br1142 class but in 2005 many of the units become a surplus and canditates for disposal.

In 2005 HectorRail bought 3 of these units after test runs in Sweden and after a succesful tests the company bought the units and eventually ended up with in all 12 units in three patches. As I saw one completely bunrd out unit in Ånge at least one is of the roster. I have seen them in service around Ånge and they have been used in 2 unit lash ups hauling long string of timber, but here we see a couple running light after a switch back move running light with a sister unit to Östersund to pick up another load. As the 142, class all the units carries names and 142.s are named after movie caracters.

Units on 0-series are straight units with ATC, the units on 100-series are equipped with remote control and units on 200 series are with the new signal system in used on the new Botnia line and to be carried out eventually on all mainlines called ERTMS.

HectorRail
142 003-3
What has made hectorRail interesting is that it has developed its current graphics in phases. here the 142 003-3 is wearing an early style of lettering and logos compare to the units shot later. The differences are quite noticeable when the units 142 003-3 and 142 110/4 are coupled together.

HectorRail
142 105-8
One of the remote control units is enjoyinh a bit of rest at the HectorRails terminal at Ånge. At the first sight the units do look the same but there are a number of detail changes like headlights and rear lights aswell different antennas and other details on their roofs.

HectorRail
142 106-4
Here 142 106-4 is caught at the roundhouse area at Ånge. It is one of the remote controlled units. All the units rebuilt in to Br 1142.s have the Mu added and so far I have seen these units work often in pairs.

HectorRail
142 107-2
In 2010 the 142 107-2 was repainted in a later version of hectorRail colors and waiting for its duty call when the vacations are over. HectorRail seem to keep the units well maintained and clean.

HectorRail
142 107-2
Back in 2010 it was the first time I ever saw any 1142.s or 142.s in action. I was suprised to find them here as their roundhouse during my first visit ever was an operation centre for Mittåg operator who ran regional trains with mix of ex swedish or norwegian power on short consists. Here 142 107-2 is hauling a respectable unit train of loaded timber northbound while the Green Cargo through freight with a pair mixws colored Rc,s waits its turn to follow the ex austrian unit to the north.

HectorRail
142 110-4
Another 142 sitting at the tracks near ther roundhouse is the remote controlled unit 142 110-4. Note the different arrangement with lights compared to 142 106-4 seen above and the variation of lettering found on 142 003 seen parked next to it.

HectorRail
142 110-4
Allmost nothing seemed to have changed since the photo from June 2010, the engine sits allmost on the same spot as earlier but I guess the engine has seen a plenty of milage since then. In the beginning these engines did have a curved extra windows in their cabs which was eventually plated over during their ÖBB days and it resulted in a much huskier look.

HectorRail
142 212
During my visit in early August the combo of 142 212 and 142 001-7 was quite busy. The first night, it hauled a heavy southbound timber train out of the yard of Ånge.

The following evening they ran light to the passanger track and after a westbound Norrtåg X51 cleared out yard and the signal turned yo green, they ran light to Östersund.

The engines on 200 series lack the computer control numbers found on the engines in 0 series and 100-series have. The engines are compareable to the Rc-classes though the 142.s are a bit more powerful.
ÖBB did however buy 10 units from Sweden in 1972-1973 a very close sisters to Swedish Rc2 class. The surviving 9 units has been resold after disposal back to Sweden to various private operators and to BV now InfraNord.

HectorRail
161 104-9
One of the huge ex NSB iron ore line legends is still working but I have a feelig that the loads are not as heavy as in its heydays. Now adays the unit is wearing an early version of HectorRails paint and is parked with a new diesel of 941 class at the yard of otta.

HectorRail
161 105-2
HectorRail seems to make good business in Norway as well. It is the very first time I have seen one of the former NSB big electrics of El15-class in blue paint. Many have been repainted in to the new owners gray and orange but this unit while switching timber cars in to the large saw mill in Otta still wears the paint scheme but new decals from its second owner MTAS. HectorRail operates all six units of these giants.

HectorRail
441 002-5
Hectorrail is not only shoppig for secondhand units this unit baed on DB.s Br185.s was indeed bought brand new. The 441 is a modern high tech unit ands do far they have two of them This one was caught in Gävle when I was taking photos of the various excursion trains for the annual open house at the national railway museum. The unit has received its eriel number as 441 because it is possible to run in four different currents used in Europe.

HectorRail
941 001-5 & 161 104-5
You can feel the shaking and hear the rumble as a passing freight train passes a station platform, following a storm that could turn your hat in to a flying object. After a less than a minute later it all turns as quiet as it was before. The signal has turned in to red as a sign that it will be a while untill another train is coming to this yard. A HectorRail unmatched lash up of a heavy modern diesel and heavy elderly electric double heading with a heavy unit train of timber to Otta.

HectorRail
941 001-5
HectorRail purchased this leasing unit which was earlier leased to another Swedish operator in 2006. The engine is a Vissloh G2000B which is used in hauling timber. It was repainted in HectorRails colors early 2007. In the following year HectorRail received a second unit which was like the first unit built in 2005. These are among the most powerful diesels in Sweden, delivering twice of tractive force compared to an T44.

HectorRail T43 225
HectorRail owns this T43 which still sported a very worn SJ paint that was painted in mid 1970.s Appearently the unit does not see much of service but looked intact and was sitting close to the HectorRail shops.
