The need to replace steam in the fifties featured in new power. In many of the passengerruns, the steampowered trains were replaced by the Y6-class railcars. In early fifites SJ had ordered the first larger class engines for switching, the V3 class. It was also desired to be able to run more economic on freight service and the bulky V3.s couldnīt be used. MAK in Germany had designed a 4-axle roddriven engine, of which the 800 hp version seem to be perfect. T21.s could also be used as well as swichters or as road switchers. The class were used on several lines and in yard work well into the 1980.es.
